For many years Diagnostic Imaging has been an important activity at San Rossore Medical Centre and a key resouce for a large catchmentarea.

All kinds of services in this Discipline are available thanks to the accessibility of state-of-the-art equipment and the specific skills of the Radiology Specialists in the various diagnostic sectors.

Equipment

Equipment available includes:

  • 5 Tesla MRI scanner
  • Dual energy Computer Tomography
  • Digital X-ray
  • Ultrasound

Magnetic Resonance

The latest “Magnetom Aera” magnetic resonance system by Siemens has a high magnetic field, with an intensity of 1.5 Tesla. The diameter of the magnet is the largest on the market, and is therefore particularly well suited for examining Patients with claustrophobia. Moreover, the intensity of the field makes it possible to examine all organs and systems using “dedicated” high performance acquisitions.

Type of examinations performed:

  • Brain
  • Spine
  • Skeleton and soft tissues
  • Large and small joints
  • Neck
  • Mediastinum
  • Abdomen (MRI of liver, MRI cholangiography, MRI of kidneys, etc.)
  • Prostate with multi-parameter examination
  • Gynaecology pelvic cavity
  • Heart
  • MRI angiography

These investigations, depending on the specific type and the working diagnosis, are performed with and without contrast medium.

IMPORTANT NOTE TO PATIENTS

Magnetic Resonance contrast media

Following the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) memorandum of 12 February 2018, concerning the suspension of some Gadolinium-based contrast agents for Magnetic Resonance imaging  investigations, it is important to point out that this suspension exclusively concerns “linear” contrast agents and not other contrast agents with a different molecular structure, which have no restrictions on their use (apart from general restrictions, which are always applied, in relation to renal impairment).

At San Rossore Medical Centre “linear” contrast agents have not been used for many years in Diagnostic Imaging.
Patients that come to our facility can be sure that services are and have (for many years) been carried out in compliance with maximum safety.

DUAL ENERGY COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY

The latest generation dual energy CT scan allows for quick time image acquisition of large body volumes.

Examination time is therefore extremely short and exposure to x-rays is fully contained.

The acquired data are processed through dedicated workstations making two and three-dimensional reconstructions possible.

Type of examinations performed:

  • Brain
  • Spine
  • Skeleton and soft tissues
  • Large and small joints
  • Neck
  • Chest and mediastinum
  • Abdomen
  • Pelvic cavity
  • Virtual colonoscopy
  • CT angiography
  • CT coronary angiogram
  • Dental scan

These investigations, depending on the specific type and the working diagnosis, are performed with and without contrast medium.

Digital x-ray

The latest generation direct digital equipment is used.

This technique allows for a reduction in the radiation dose, direct screen display and processing of the image, with high spatial and contrast resolution.

Type of examinations performed without contrast medium:

  • Chest
  • Abdomen
  • Skeleton
  • Large and small joints

Type of examinations performed with contrast medium:

  • Digestive system: oesophagus, stomach and duodenum, small intestine, colon with double-contrast, defecography
  • Urinary system: urography, retrograde and micturition urethrocystography

ULTRASOUND

The Medical Centre’s diagnostic ultrasound makes use of the latest generation equipment with software dedicated to analysing various superficial and deep organs using linear, convex and intracavity probes from 3 to 11 Mhz, with high definition imaging.

Type of examinations performed:

  • Abdominal ultrasound (liver, kidneys, etc.)
  • Neck ultrasound (thyroid, salivary glands)
  • Soft tissue ultrasound
  • Breast ultrasound
  • Muscle and joint ultrasound
  • Prostate ultrasound
  • Transvaginal ultrasound
