World record set by San Rossore Medical Center
Pisa, May 31st 2016 – A world record was set at San Rossore Medical Center in Pisa, where a micro-lens to treat presbyopia was implanted by dr. Marco Fantozzi, one of the most expert and recognised ophtalmologist in refractory surgery by means of the “Femtoseconds laser”.
Presbyopia is an age related physiological condition of the visual system, which commonly affects people in their 40’s given the fact the crystalline lens (a natural lens we have in the eyes) tends to loose its elasticity as years pass. This disease causes problems in focusing close objects, a book for example, or in performing short range activities such as using a cell phone or a laptop, especially in low lighting conditions. “When not kept under control, presbyopia can lead to headache and visual fatigue while performing normal daily activities, furthermore when corrected with common glasses, it may complicate patients’ lives especially if they are affected by visual pathologies like myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism, which means they are already wearing other glasses” dr. Marco Fantozzi expalins.
Being sight the one among the five senses that allows us to better recognise and identify places, objects and people and to impress the best memories in our mind, in order to preserve this fundamental resource San Rossore Medical Center offers its patients the latest laser technology. The innovative Femtoseconds laser proves to be excellent for its accuracy in incisions, its speed and its softness; it allows the creation of a 3D pocket with a smooth surface which facilitates the insertion of a corneal lens
the intra-corneal micro-lens implant without any friction which affect its functioning and “minimizing the risk of micro-wrinkles formation a common occurence with other lasers which make the Femto laser one of the best corneal laser of our time.” as dr. Fantozzi says “After 24 hours from the operation, the first patient was able to see 10/10 from a distance and the smallest letters closely. This operation was attended also by the inventor of this particular lens, Dr. Vladimir Feingold from Irvine (California), who choosed our medical center to perform its placement for the first time.
“Important to note it is that this operation is reversible, it doesn’t damage tissues and it is repeatable: in fact, if it’s necessary, it is possible to replace the lens with another one of higher gradation moreover It just takes 10 minutes for the application, no hospital stay or particular requirements are needed but the use of specific eye drops. It does not produce any side effects apart from a possible slight feeling of foreign body in the eye during the hours immediately following the operation.
